, our own phil lebeau with more details on that. >> reporter: good morning, kate. we're here at the l.a. auto so where as they get ready to open the show, a lot of talk is about what's happening with tesla. a few minutes ago, this tweet from elon musk, the ceo of tesla. he says why does a tesla fire with no injury get more media headlines than 100 gas car fires that kill hundreds of people per year? what he's referencing is the fact that the national highway traffic safety administration has opened a formal investigation into the model s battery fires. in doing so the agency said the investigation was prompted by recent incidents in washington state and tennessee that resulted in battery fires due to undercarriage strikes with roadway debris. nobody was injured, nobody was killed in either of the tesla model s fires and tesla this morning said it asked the national highway traffic safety association to launch a formal investigation. it brings up the question, will there be a rrl? this is what elon musk said at the deal book contract just last week when andrew ross sorkin asked him abo

that the plane maker rejecting a controversial contract proposal. it could have big ramifications. our phil lebeau in chicago. phil, this seemed like a real important vote not just for boeing but also for the labor community as a whole. >> absolutely because this is one of those plumb possibilities out there in terms of where boeing puts the 777 x plane. the union, the machinist in seattle, had a chance to vote on a contract offer which would extend through 2024. two-thirds of the members voted it down last night. here's a sense of what they were feeling as they were voting. >> i was quite certain it was not going to pass. i could not see my brothers and sisters taking this and the way it was presented to us as extortion and accepting it. >> they choose to take the 777 x the same path they took the 787 and commit corporate suicide, it's their business. it's not ours. >> keep in mind, boeing offered a guarantee of the 777x being built in the puget sound if the union agreed to that eight-year contract which would have had some changes to the pension, a 1% a year pay raise. they would have had to pay
. we're not flying an airplane. phil lebeau has more. >> a statement from the fcc and commissioner tom wheeler in regards to the possibility of allowing phone calls to be made on airplanes if they change the rules. he essentially says, modern technologies can deliver mobile services in the air safely and reliably. and the time is right to review our outdated and restrictive rules. technologically speaking, it may be time to review those rules. i should point this out, bill and maria. when they change the rules within the last month in terms of allowing people to use their devices below 10,000 feet, there was overwhelming evidence that people do not want other people to use cell phones on the planes. in fact, in one survey, people were more opposed to allows cell phone use than they were to allows passengers to be overintoxicated on flights. that gives you some indication of just how much people are against the idea of cell phone calls being allowed on commercial air flights. >> how would you like to be the guy that's sitting with everybody around you, using their cell phone at that tim
base some 12 miles away. we expect it to take off any time now. phil lebeau has been following the story, and he joins us live from chicago. phil, first of all, how did this happen? and second of all, this is a much shorter strip than mcconnell has. how's this going to work? >> reporter: let's start first with taking off and the shorter runway. the runway at jabara airport is about 6,100 feet long. typically a 747 modified like this would have a ruppway of at least 9,100 feet, a 3,000-foot difference. they're not going to take off until all parties sign off. authorities say yes, we believe we have enough room for taking off. that's the takeoff we may see relatively soon. as for how it got here, the dreamlifter was carrying 787 dreamliner parts from italy, stopped in new york and was on its way to the facility in wichita, spirit air systems where it was going to be dropping off parts, picking up others. as the pilots were coming in on approach late last night, listen to the exchange between the dreamlifter pilot and the air traffic control tower. >> 4241 heavy, do you know which
, prompting companies around the world to open up more plans there, fill le beau joins us live from mexico with some more on this phenomenon. good morning, phil. >> reporter: good morning, kelly. we're on the floor of the plant for a japanese auto parts supplier. they are going to be building exhaust systems as well as control modules for nissan, general motors, mazda, they're exploetding here. they're in the midst of a hiring boom. they are going to 1,400 workers a year ago. by the time this expansion is done in the next few years, they'll be up to 3,100 workers. that's what we are seeing throughout mexico when you look at the auto and aerospace industry. this has become the hottest place for the growth of those jobs. primarily because it benefits from a number of factors, including trade agreements, low cost, et cetera. take a look at this, a lot of people sit there and say, around they shipping jobs to china? look at the cost difference for jobs and exports out of mexico versus china versus the united nations united states. they have to realize members ka has become the hottest export h
satisfaction. but, of course, this comes as the car is also under some government scrutiny. phil lebeau caught up with the head of national highway safety, the safety at administration late yesterday about its investigation into the tesla s. >> once we made that decision and once we talked to tesla about that decision, they were more than open about saying we want the highest level of scrutiny, we want to cooperate with you on every level of this investigation. they feel very strongly about the quality and safety of their vehicles. we have a lot of questions to have answered. they're willing to step forward to the plate and be collaborative is very positive. >> that's a very positive statement from the government. usually it's much more contentious. take a look at what strictland had to say about how long the investigation might take. >> no time frame. we really want to get this done right. sometimes investigations take a week, sometimes they can take several months. i have no notion or real indication how long this will take. but with tesla being willing to be proactive, hopefully it will be
